My husband and I moved to Colorado in 2020. At the time, we still had our two dogs which we sadly lost shortly thereafter due to old age. Needless to say, if you ever had a pet, you know we were heartbroken and missing them constantly. We still do. When we had the opportunity to attend the Goldens in Golden event, a reunion of happy dogs and their proud parents taking place each year in February in Golden, Colorado, our hearts melted and were temporarily soothed. Whether you own a Golden or not, if you love dogs, this event is not to be missed. Just be aware that it is very popular, so parking might be a challenge. Be prepared to feel a whole lotta love, though – it’s worth it! I’ll be there again this coming Saturday, February 7, juggling taking pictures and petting as many furry friends as possible. Maybe I’ll see you around!

2025 Goldens in Golden Event: A Dog Lover’s Dream
It’s a cold day in February but we feel immediately warmed up as we squeeze through a happy crowd: hundreds of Golden Retrievers and their owners parade through the quiet mountain town of Golden, Colorado for the annual Goldens in Golden event. If you are looking for the most scenic drive through the mountains, you must drive the Million Dollar Highway and San Juan Skyway! We drove the loop from Ridgeway, to Ouray, Durango, Telluride, and back, all the way picking up our jaws from the ground as we took in magnificent views. On the way, we visited the exceptional Mesa Verde National Park. So, buckle up, this post is long, but only because I had to include a ton of photos. Enjoy!

Known as The Switzerland of America, Ouray is nestled in the San Juan Mountains, perched at 7,792 ft. It has been crowned the “Outdoor Recreational Capitol of Colorado,” and for a small town (with about a thousand permanent residents), Ouray has plenty of activities to offer to the hundreds of thousands of yearly visitors. It’s is a great base for day trips; while in town, hike up to Cascade Falls, or through Box Cañon. After a vigorous trek, relax in Ouray’s hot springs. If you’re up for a thrill, drive the Million Dollar Highway, connecting Ouray to Silverton, famous for its dangerous twists and turns, but also for spectacular vistas (one of the most scenic drives in the US).

We moved to the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies in 2020. Since then, we visited a few magnificent locations around the area but nothing prepared us for how amazing the western part of the state is (aka the Western Slope).
