Mid-April 2020, we followed Route 66, and found ourselves once again in New Mexico, just outside of Albuquerque. We drove past the billboard featuring a Route 66 postcard that marks the entrance to Enchanted Trails RV Park, and settled into our parking spot behind the now familiar vintage RVs.

The Road of Isolation

I-40 took us out of Kingman through the rocky and austere Arizona landscape, past the snowy Humphreys Peak in Flagstaff, then Meteor Crater, and down to a wide spot in the road, Holbrook, Arizona.

Kingman, Arizona: Heart of Route 66

Once a thriving and fast-growing town, Kingman played an important role in the development of Route 66 and the western expansion. Established in the 1800s as a railroad town, Kingman also served as a base for gold seekers in the Black Mountains nearby and as the Gateway to Boulder Dam (Hoover Dam). Although today the town doesn’t exult its olden days’ vibe, it still holds a lot of historic interest.

An Intriguing Fluke: Salton Sea, California

From the blooming paradise of Hot Springs, California, we followed I-10 south to Thermal, California, a wide spot in the road near Salton Sea. The inland sea might look pretty, but its history is as troubled and its fumes are toxic.
