When someone mentions Albuquerque, we might immediately picture colorful balloons floating into the October sky. However, there is more to the town than hot air: historic Route 66 runs through town, ancient petroglyphs adorn volcanic rocks over 17 miles in Petroglyph National Monument, and one can get a good look at Native American history and culture at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.

White Sands National Park: A Winter Wonderland in the Chihuahuan Desert
Is this snow? No, it’s sand! But apparently it’s just as fun to slide down this white hill! White Sands National Park in New Mexico is a hidden gem at the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, in New Mexico. The dynamic dunes stretch for more than two hundred miles, and form the largest gypsum dune field in the world.

Perched at almost 4,500 feet, Alpine is a remote small Texas town, home of The Museum Of The Big Bend On The Sul Ross University Campus. Nearby, Marfa lures visitors with its mysterious lights, historic downtown, and art scene. Less than an hour’s drive up the mountain, the McDonald Observatory is a must-see!

Born in Kentucky, Phantly Roy Bean Jr. was an American saloon-keeper and Justice of the Peace in Val Verde County, Texas. Located in a desolate patch of the Chihuahuan Desert, his saloon served both as entertainment and as a court. Judge Roy Bean proudly called himself “The Only Law West of the Pecos”. An hour’s drive from Del Rio, we stopped to visit the museum and find out more about this colorful character.
